Characteristics

The Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences is an educational model project of the Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), accopmlished by the TongjiUniversity and a consortium of German Universites of Applied Sciences. The CDHAW is a secondary educational facility of the TongjiUniversity which will gain full autonomy in the context of the regulations of the Chinese law. The goals of the project are the introduction of the German model of the University of Applied Sciences in the academic field of Chinese Universities and the practical training of engineers with interdisciplinary knowledge, international competences and the ability to find solutions for problems in the industry and economy of both countries. Thus the CDHAW is to supply a new model of the engineering education to the Chinese universities.

Section of studies

At the CDHAW the orientation of the work is scientifical and the research is application orientated. The first mandatory internship and the occupation-practical study term, the German and English language course are firm components of the four years study, which is enriched by a stay in Germany. After fulfilment of the conditions defined from both sides a double Bachelordiploma is awarded. This taut and compact study offers the students interdisciplinary know-how, international competences and solutions for specific technical and economic problems of their subject.

Courses of studies

The CDHAW stresses predominantly a engineer-scientific study, whereby a special emphasis is set on the interdisciplinarity and the obtainance of a basic knowledge of applied economics. Three four years study courses with a Bachelor Degree are being offered in the initial phase: Mechatronics, Vehicle Service/Customer Service and Facility Management.

Practical Experience

The practical orientation is the substantial principal of the education. During the four years study therefore both, a basic practical course of twelve weeks and a four-month practical study term are part of the education. The fourth academic year is planned for the stay in Germany, during which the students absolve one term in enterprises, and attend certain training courses at the partner universities and do research for their Bachelor paper, predominantly in enterprises.

Bilingualism

The study at the CDHAW takes four years and ends with the Bachelor degree. The curricula are compiled by Chinese and German co-ordinators, up to 30% of the technical training courses will be held by professors and lecturers from the industry in German language (for the plan of the employment of German professors see table 1). For this purpose the students attend a German language course of approx. 1200 lessons. In addition they still maintain an English language course of approx. 300 lessons.
